The Wood Itself

Why Teak Lasts Indoors and Out

Teak has been prized for centuries, from ship decks to the carved palaces of Java. Four natural properties explain why it is still the first choice for furniture that has to last.

Natural oils

Teak holds its own oils, which repel water and help protect the wood against rot and insects.

Very stable

It swells and shrinks less than most hardwoods, so joints stay tight and tabletops stay flat.

Strong for its weight

Dense enough for slim chair legs and long benches, yet comfortable to move around.

Ages gracefully

Outdoors it weathers to an even silver grey. Indoors it deepens into a rich golden brown.

Know What You Are Buying

How Teak Is Graded

Not all teak is the same. Grade depends mainly on how much heartwood, the dense oily core of the tree, ends up in the timber. Here is how the grades are usually understood in the trade.

GradeHeartwoodAppearanceTypical use
Grade AMostly heartwoodEven golden brown, tight grain, few knotsPremium outdoor furniture, yacht and hotel projects
Grade BHeartwood with some sapwoodMore colour variation and small knotsIndoor furniture and mid-range garden sets
Grade CMore sapwoodLighter streaks, visible natural featuresRustic styles and painted or indoor pieces

Grade definitions differ between suppliers, so we send photos of the actual timber before production. Tell us your market and price point and we will recommend the right grade.

Central Java Craftsmanship

Hand-Carved Teak From Our Workshop

Teak carves cleanly and holds fine detail, which is why Javanese carvers have worked with it for generations. Our carving team produces relief panels, room dividers and full gebyok entrances by hand.

Teak Care Guide

Silver Grey or Golden Brown: Caring for Teak

Outdoor teak gives your customers two looks to choose from. Share this simple guide with them, it saves a lot of after-sales questions.

Let it weather naturally

  • Leave the furniture untreated outdoors
  • It turns silver grey within a few months of sun
  • Clean once or twice a year with a soft brush and mild soapy water
  • No oil or sealer needed, strength is not affected

Keep the golden colour

  • Clean the surface and let it dry fully
  • Apply a teak protector or sealer made for outdoor use
  • Reapply when the colour starts to fade, usually once or twice a year
  • Avoid varnish or paint, which crack and peel in strong sun
Teak Furniture FAQ

Questions About Indonesian Teak

What importers and retailers usually ask before ordering teak furniture.

Why is teak the best wood for outdoor furniture?

Teak contains natural oils and silica that help it resist water, rot and insects without heavy coatings. It also moves very little as humidity changes, so outdoor tables and chairs stay tight and flat through rain, sun and seasonal swings.

Will teak furniture turn grey outdoors?

Yes. Left untreated in the sun, teak slowly changes from golden brown to a soft silver grey within a few months. This is only a surface colour change and does not affect strength. If you prefer the golden tone, a teak protector or sealer can be applied regularly.

Does teak furniture need oiling?

Not for durability, because the wood already contains its own oils. Oiling or sealing is purely about keeping the golden colour. For most outdoor furniture, cleaning with a soft brush and mild soapy water once or twice a year is enough.

Should outdoor teak be lacquered or painted?

We do not recommend lacquer or paint for outdoor teak. Hard coatings crack and peel under strong sun, then need sanding back. Outdoor pieces are best left natural or finished with an oil or sealer made for teak. Indoor teak can take lacquer or a melamine finish without problems.

What do teak grades A, B and C mean?

Grades describe how much heartwood the timber contains. Grade A is mostly heartwood with an even golden colour, Grade B has some sapwood and more colour variation, and Grade C contains more sapwood and natural features. Definitions vary between suppliers, so we confirm the grade with photos before production.

Is your teak legal and sustainably sourced?

Yes. All the teak we use is legal Indonesian timber verified under SVLK, Indonesia's national timber legality system, and our shipments carry SVLK V-Legal export documents.

Can you make custom or hand-carved teak pieces?

Yes. Besides standard dining, bedroom and garden collections, our carvers produce hand-carved teak panels, gebyok room dividers and decorative pieces from your drawings or reference photos.

How long does teak furniture last?

Well-made solid teak furniture can last for decades, including outdoors. That long life is why hotels, resorts and garden retailers keep choosing teak even though it costs more than most other hardwoods.
