Natural vs Synthetic Rattan
Both look woven and both are made by hand, but they behave very differently once they leave the showroom. Use this comparison to pick the right material for each collection.
| Natural rattan | Synthetic rattan (PE) | |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Climbing palm stems, cane and core from Indonesian forests | Polyethylene fibre woven to look like rattan |
| Look and feel | Warm, organic, every strand slightly different | Uniform colour and texture, many colour options |
| Best place | Indoors and covered terraces | Fully outdoor: gardens, pool decks, beach clubs |
| Sun and rain | Fades and dries out in direct sun and rain | UV stabilised, does not absorb water |
| Care | Dust and wipe, avoid soaking | Rinse with water and mild soap |
| Typical buyers | Home furniture retailers, boutique hotels, cafes | Resorts, outdoor living stores, hospitality projects |
Rattan Cane Webbing on Solid Wood Furniture
Because we run a solid wood workshop and work with rattan, we can do something many rattan-only suppliers cannot: build the hardwood frame and weave the cane into it under one roof. These are cane details from recent orders.

Rattan Materials Explained
One rattan stem gives several materials, each with its own job in a piece of furniture. Knowing them makes it easier to brief a design and compare quotations.
Rattan poles
Thick stems bent with heat into chair frames, arms and legs.
Rattan core
The inner part of the stem, round and flexible, used for full woven seats and backs.
Rattan peel
Thin strips of skin used to bind joints and wrap frames neatly.
Cane webbing
Pre-woven sheets of cane in open or close weave, set into wooden frames.
Synthetic PE
Polyethylene strands in flat, round or half-round profiles for outdoor weaving.
How to Care for Rattan Furniture
A few simple habits keep rattan looking good for years. Feel free to pass this guide on to your own customers.
Natural rattan and cane
- Dust regularly with a soft brush or vacuum brush attachment
- Wipe with a lightly damp cloth, never soak it
- Keep out of constant direct sun and away from heaters
- In very dry rooms, an occasional light mist helps keep cane flexible
Synthetic all-weather rattan
- Rinse with a garden hose to remove dust and salt
- Wash with water and mild soap, then let it air dry
- Use breathable covers in the off-season
- Store cushions indoors during long rainy periods
Questions About Indonesian Rattan
What importers, retailers and hospitality buyers ask us most about rattan.
Can natural rattan furniture be used outdoors?
Natural rattan is best for indoor rooms and covered outdoor spaces such as verandas and pool pavilions. Direct sun and rain will dry it out and fade it over time. For fully exposed areas, synthetic all-weather rattan is the better choice.
What is synthetic rattan made of?
Synthetic or all-weather rattan is a polyethylene (PE) fibre woven by hand in the same way as natural rattan. Good quality PE rattan is UV stabilised, does not absorb water and keeps its colour much longer outdoors.
What is the difference between rattan and cane?
Rattan is the whole climbing palm stem, used thick for furniture frames. Cane is the thin outer skin peeled from the rattan stem, which is woven into the open mesh webbing you see on chair backs, cabinet doors and headboards.
Can you combine rattan with solid wood?
Yes. Solid mahogany or teak frames with cane webbing panels are one of our most popular styles, used on consoles, wardrobes, headboards, chairs and even inset under glass on dining tables.
Can I choose the weave pattern and colour?
Yes. Cane webbing comes in an open hexagonal weave or a tighter close weave, in natural or tinted tones. Synthetic rattan is available in many colours and strand profiles. Send us a reference photo and we will match it.
Is rattan a sustainable material?
Rattan is a fast-growing climbing palm that is harvested without cutting down the forest it grows in, and Indonesia is the world's largest source of natural rattan. Buying rattan gives forest communities a reason to keep their forests standing.
How do I clean and maintain rattan furniture?
Dust natural rattan regularly with a soft brush, wipe it with a damp cloth when needed and keep it away from constant direct sun. Synthetic rattan can simply be washed with water and mild soap.
Do you make custom rattan furniture for hotels and resorts?
Yes. We produce OEM/ODM rattan and wood-rattan pieces for hotels, resorts, restaurants and retailers, from your drawings or reference photos, in quantities that fit your project.
